Laidley leaps into Spring

Jan and I are having a great time at the Spring Festival in Laidley. You can find us at the Uniting Church at the quilt show. Just follow the queue for strawberries and ice cream but be warned they are addictive. And so are the peach blossoms and the home-made cakes and, well you get the general idea.

As always the good folk of Laidley have done a sterling job and the show is a real hit. Come and see us tomorrow and stay for the street parade. Rather than me tell you about it any more here’s some photos:

We brought the ‘Flowers for Trudy’ quilt as you can see and everyone has been very impressed and we have sold more tickets which is wonderful although it’s sad to think we may only have it with us for another couple of months.

Jan’s been busy doing demos:

And the tablerunner Mum made was a big hit:

Oh and did I mention the food?

It’s the last day tomorrow so we look forward to seeing you.

Maryborough Show

Having a great weekend at the Rotary Heritage Craft weekend at Maryborough. Remember last year we were here we challenged one of the organisers to make up our owl? Well he did and here’s the proof.

We hung our ‘Flowers for Trudy’ quilt and we have had a huge response to it. Everyone loves the bright colours and are quite disappointed when we tell them it isn’t a kit for sale. We have sold quite a few raffle tickets so we have raised more for the Blue Nurses which is great.
We have seen some beautiful quilts here – both machine-pieced and hand-embroidered. Plus there are great stalls here. I have helped the local economy you will be pleased to hear.
It’s also been very nice spending time with Mum and Dad who have been helping Jan and I. We’ve discovered some hidden gems including a great breakfast spot.
Here are some photos from the show. Come and say hello if you’re in town tomorrow.

Winners are Grinners!

Well it has certainly been an inspiring weekend for some Apatchy girls – at the show at Brookfield two of our girls swept the awards – Lesa with her magnificent modern Baltimore and Chris with her wonderful tea cosies. Have a look at the photos and tell me they aren’t happy. Great work ladies, congratulations!

Quilt show and Trudy’s quilt

We are having fun at the Boonah Quilt Show today and tomorrow. Hope you get a chance to visit because there are some beautiful quilts on display.

The nicest is of course ours shown here-

We have finally received permission from the Blue Nurses to hold a raffle for this quilt, the whole proceeds of which will be donated to them.

For those who don’t know – Trudy, a good friend of ours passed away last year and we decided to make a group quilt in her memory and raffle it for her favourite charity (Blue Nurses). She loved flowers and her favourite colours were red and orange so that was the basis of the colour scheme.

Thirty two Apatchy Quilting girls worked on this quilt and thirty blocks make up the front with another used for the label on the back. The quilt is called “Flowers for Trudy”

The raffle will be drawn at our Christmas party on 6th December 2014. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Good luck!

In case you’re wondering the last two photos were taken just now just before closing time. There’s no way I could have taken a photo this morning because it was packed!

We were rushed off our feet with a lot of quilt groups making a day of it here. We said hello to some girls from the Beenleigh Quilters, some from Stanthorpe and many more.

Jan was busy doing demos with the Kanzashi flower tools. It was standing room only.

Come and say hello tomorrow if you’re in the area.

Inspirational quilts

Went to the craft show on Sunday here in Brisbane  – great day to go on Sunday because there aren’t as many people so you could wander around the stalls without having to battle the crowds. I managed to purchase a few items that I am planning to use in my challenge quilt. When I say ‘a few items’ what I actually mean is that I now have enough for a dozen challenge quilts – and when it comes to the building of it I’ll probably use very little. Oh well more in the stash. Don’t forget the challenge quilt is due in by 30th November and the theme is ‘Holiday’.

As usual there was a lot of inspiration at the show. We chatted with Loani Prior – the guru of tea cosy makers. She is such a friendly person and I told her how much I had enjoyed the photographic exhibition ‘Portrait of a Tea Cosy’ that I saw at Warwick Art Gallery in July for the ‘Jumpers and Jazz’ Festival. If you missed it have a look here. She certainly is inspirational – and her inspiration has extended to Apatchy – here’s a photo of our Chris with Loani at the show last Wednesday. Chris is no slouch at making tea cosies herself and has produced several beauties – you can see a couple in ‘Your Gallery’.

Speaking of inspiration have a look at these few examples of the treasures we found at the show:

You can see that I am following a theme here with many of the pictorial quilts. Actually I was very pleased to meet Barry Deans – the winner of the Apatchy Quilting prize at the Quilt Show – and have an interesting discussion about art and quilts. He raised the question of whether the quilts should be judged on technical merit and then artistic or the other way around – what do you think? He lives on the Gold Coast and it is his first time entering so he has certainly set the bar high. Here is his winning piece (you can tell he is an artist – just look at that perspective).

At the same time the quilt show was on another show was on a little further along the building – the ‘Man Expo’ – featuring all things ‘blokey’ – beer-topia, bbq demos, billiards tables and the Bundaberg Rum ‘Distillatorium’. Rumour had it that there were bikini-clad girls as well . The menfolk in my family wandered along to it rather than come to the quilt show with me – can’t think why. I saw this group of guys waiting directly outside the quilt show doors. I suspect they hadn’t just come from the quilt show either – or am I being too stereotyped in my thinking?

Spring into Laidley

We’re AWOL this weekend enjoying the sunshine and country hospitality at the Laidley Spring Festival. The town has been re-energised this weekend after a disastrous two years of floodIng. Many places have only just re-opened after being inundated with floodwater for the second time in January. You won’t see anyone downcast though. The streets are filled with craft stalls, the garden show is in full swing and flower baskets are hanging on poles all the way through the main street.

So if you’re at a loss tomorrow and want to help a little community with a big heart then come to the final day of the Spring Festival. You can see the shows and enjoy the street parade at noon. Don’t forget to come to the Quilt Show at the Uniting Church. We’ll be waiting for you – and we’ll try not to eat all the homemade cakes or the ice creams with strawberries!

We had to take photos of our stand before the show opened because the crowds meant we couldn’t get in for a photo after that. Here’s some things you’ll see at our stand:

Oh yes did I mention that Laidley has the best peach blossoms in all the land? No not on the trees – they’re the delicious little cakes above. Actually I think it must be cup-of-tea time now………

Art Attack

Another exciting day with a visit to the open day of the Textile Art Academy. There was an array of amazing creations both from the artists and their students. The academy has been running workshops this week and the creativity of its members was evident today. From artist’s books to monoprinting (with Sandra Pearce) and from basketry to felted creations the whole place was a feast for the eyes and a great source of inspiration.  It was difficult to avoid bringing everything home (and indeed there is an addition to the decor in the workroom).

Svenja, a textile artist who lives here in Brisbane, had a display of her work with some amazing wearable art from dyed silk scarves to a siren of the sea.   Here are some photos to whet your appetite.

Ok so not what you’d wear down to the corner shop for a loaf of bread but pretty special aren’t they! Actually my friend Jan and I were commenting on many of the ladies who wore distinctive clothing – all individually designed artwork. Not only were these artistic statements but some were entirely personal. One lady wore what was essentially of travel journal. Each area of the piece had embroidery or appliqué that referred to some part of her trip to Western Australia. I would love to have a more avant garde wardrobe but wouldn’t dare wear something too bohemian. Rather sad as this would be a wonderfully tactile way of exploring my fascination with textiles. Maybe one day…… What about you? Would you like to be less beige sometimes?

Winter Blues

It’s been very chilly in this part of the world lately – perfect quilting weather in fact! Here are some winter blues that won’t give you the sniffles.

PicMonkey Collage

Blue is one of my favourite colours and I love the variation from aqua to the deepest navy. Do you feel inspired?

Speaking of inspiration I was fortunate to attend the opening of the Textile Art Academy’s tutors exhibition last night. What a wonderful bohemian group was there – and really inspirational pieces. It certainly inspired me to think about the next project. Here are a couple of photos of the people I saw there. Aren’t they colourful! These girls know how to live life that’s for sure.

I was reminded in another way this weekend of the importance of living life and taking time out to pursue your inspirations. I had a call from a lady whose sister is suffering from dementia and is now living in an intensive care facility. This lady wanted to give me her sister’s stash because she doesn’t sew and doesn’t know anyone who quilts. As I am in the phone book under A I was the first one called. I thought it was so sad and vowed to distribute the fabric to those who make charity quilts. Although this will be a positive end to the situation I still think it’s very sad. So…really…. make sure you have a plan for your stash because you don’t want your family to give it all away to strangers now do you?

Since we last spoke we had a birthday in class. I always feel honoured when someone comes to class on their birthday – what an important day to attend. Here’s June having a special wish on hers.

Almost finished the stocktaking – don’t forget to enter the competition to guess the number of fabric bolts in the shop – you have until New Year’s Eve – that’s accountant’s new year of course – or this Saturday night if your not sure.

Don’t Panic I’m Still Here!

The trouble with having responsibility for a blog is that if you don’t write anything for over a fortnight people start wondering what you’ve been up to. Of course if they knew that you’d had parents and then grandchildren staying for that time they would know the answer! So here’s a little photographic montage to explain the absence:

First the teenager-in-residence took me to the markets for Mother’s Day – a very pleasant way to spend the day, then the children arrived and we enjoyed baby ‘chino’s, pony rides and the baby animal farm as well as a trip to the City.

The youngest female in the family has been groomed to continue the quilting tradition. She attended classes while she was visiting and was very interested in the whole process. During one class she took some photos with my phone. The pictures she took show a interesting perspective on the class don’t you think!

imageimageimageimage

It’s been an interesting time at Apatchy with classes as well as visitors. Last year we started the ‘Campfire Sessions’ where one of you clever ladies show the rest of us a glimpse into your expertise. A couple of weeks ago the talented Lynette showed some of the group how to go about free motion quilting. Her patience and simple explanations made it fun and there were at least two new converts by the end of the class. Here she is showing Margaret a thing or two while Sharyn gets going on her piece.

image

We also had two VIP visitors this week. Nicola brought her mother in law (who is visiting from Scotland) to see us and of course the lovely Isla, now 12 weeks old.

image

And so to this weekend – I had a look around the Mad Quilters’s Gathering. It is always fun to attend a quilt show and see all the lovely fabrics out there. Everyone seems to have slightly different ranges. I said hello to Nikki Tervo and she promised she will come to visit us again soon to show us all her lovely buttons and stitcheries in person so stay tuned!

Also chatted with Tamara from Twilight Retreats. She mentioned that she’d already spoken with some of you about our upcoming retreat so you probably know all the details already. For those who don’t we are looking at the weekend of the 16th August. Those of you who won’t be in class this week please contact me.

Finally today was spent re-arranging and sorting things out after the melee of the past month. The office mess was starting to take over and I was in danger of being buried by paperwork. Don’t you hate having to do all the tidying and so on before you actually get a chance to do some sewing (have I mentioned this before). Usually it’s just annoying but today was quite satisfying. After I’d juggled some papers I used some styrofoam I purloined from a shop to make a sort of design wall and pinned all the blocks we’ve received so far for Trudy’s memorial quilt – the one we’re donating to the Blue Nurses. All blocks have to be by the end of May so not long to go but still time. Not being a very patient person I didn’t want to wait until then plus you have been asking me what the blocks look like so here they are – not trimmed to size (obviously) and just randomly put on the wall (well as random as I can be). Don’t they look lovely? Wouldn’t Trudy be pleased – I think it’s a very happy quilt. What do you think?

image

Oh and last weekend, when I was in the city, we stopped in at Tiffany’s (live in hope). The release of ‘The Great Gatsby’ movie has obviously been an inspiration for their visual merchandising as you can see here

image

Have you ever been inspired to make a quilt by a movie? Where does your inspiration come from then?

Maleny Morsel

Out and about this weekend in Maleny to see the Quota Quilt Show and Wood Expo (Dad’s visiting). Saw some lovely quilts -here’s some we all liked:-

imageimageimageimage

The last one was the result of a jelly roll race. At the Apatchy classes a couple of weeks ago we saw a video of the 1600 quilt made from a jelly roll and it was great to see one made from a race. I will put the link on another page very soon.

The log cabin quilt is also interesting. I think the log cabin is a very underestimated block and depending on how you place each block you can achieve interesting illusions as in this quilt. I always tell new quilters that, although it may be an ‘easy’ block it can still be striking en masse in a quilt.

After a very enjoyable morning tea it was off to the Wood Expo. This event was so popular that there was a traffic jam in downtown Maleny to get to it! It was interesting to see all the blokes looking at all the raw materials and tools and salivating just as we do when we see fat quarters and quilting patterns! There were also some amazing creations – one fellow makes magnificent pieces of furniture including doors with frogs and other animals carved into the timber.  Another innovative artist made this creation from rather more rustic pieces.

What do you think about our craft/art? Are quilting enthusiasts the same as others or not?

It’s amazing what can spark the inspiration for a new quilt project. Maybe it strikes when you’re browsing through a quilting magazine or when you see a new range of fabric. Colours and designs come together in your mind and a new project is born. Whether you choose a pattern or create your own the thrill is the same. Here in Brisbane we are heading into winter – perfect quilting weather. I hope you have a project or three in mind. If not you might like to check out my boards on Pinterest. Just Go to Pinterest.com and look for Apatchy Kaye or else just call me for a chat.
